Over the years the kitchen has gained popularity as the central, most important room in any home. It enjoys, in most cases a round the clock patronage, starting from a very early morning breakfast to a late night snack. The kitchen is a loyal witness to any drama in life that unfolds in every home whether preparing an important meal for a client or surprising a loved one on a special occasion; or a weekend dinner specially made for the grandchildren. So when it comes to planning for a kitchen renovation, there are a lot of things to do and consider so that it will become a room where everybody will feel comfortable and welcome.
First and foremost, set a budget. Decide how much money you are going to spend on your project. To have a budget already set for a specific project will help you decide more easily how far you will go in terms of choosing the materials and design for your kitchen renovation. If possible, price out every item you want to include in your new kitchen, like new appliances, fixtures and accessories. Do not leave anything off your list; as much as possible include even the smallest detail like paints and brushes. There are wide ranges of materials available so you can choose from whichever price range you can afford. Once everything is priced, add 20% onto the cost of the job because you never know when things will go wrong and you suddenly find yourself out of budget.
After all the financing is thought about then you are set to start. Try to have a look at your own existing kitchen. How well do you like it? Is there any part of it that you love and want to retain? Or any part of it that you hate and want to change? Or is there something that you want to add or wish you have? Is the size sufficient enough for your family needs? Or do you need to have a bigger space and more storage? Then think of a style you want for your new kitchen. Taking into consideration the style of your own house and of course your sense of taste. If budget permits you can hire a kitchen design expert who can help you draw out all these things. While still in the planning process it is always necessary to define the space available.
Note any opportunities for space modification. Areas with interesting architectural details should be utilized to their full advantage, as they will accentuate the overall visual interest of the entire room. Today there are a lot of kitchen designs to choose from and in varied themes like old world style, European and American country style, Victorian Kitchens, American Traditional, Shaker style and the list goes on. Choose a design which suits your personality, lifestyle and the style of your house itself. There are at least four basic kitchen layouts than you can choose from and incorporate in your own kitchen.
1. Single-wall Layout: This layout is usually done with small spaces where all the appliances and cabinetry are placed against one wall, where there\’s no other place to put it. A full height unit like a refrigerator must be placed at one end while a cooktop should be placed near the sink and never at the end of the run. Otherwise it will create an unsafe environment and at the same time add unnecessary steps to the cooking process.
2. Corridor Layout: A corridor or galley layout is made of two opposing counters which should be at least 42\” apart. This is also a good design layout for small spaces but has the added advantage over the single-wall layout since, the work-triangle principle can be applied here, although this layout sometimes suffers from traffic passing through.
3. L-shaped Layout: An L-shaped layout is usually a more desirable layout for a kitchen with limited space, compared with both the single layout and the corridor layout. The work triangle can be designed in such a way that there will be fewer steps for the cook thus making the cooking experience less arduous. It\’s also usually free from traffic snarls compared with the corridor layout. Make sure however, that the counters are not interrupted by the passage door, refrigerator or full length cabinets.
4. U-shaped Layout: The U-shaped layout is by far the most versatile and efficient kitchen layout. If your space and budget can accommodate this type go for it. This type of layout makes the most of the working triangle principle. All the appliances, storage systems and work areas face each other and are directed towards a central point - the kitchen operator.
After deciding on which layout you would like for your kitchen, then it\’s time to get down to details. Take into consideration the comfort of the cook. There should be a minimum distance between repetitive chores to save the cook from fatigue therefore adding comfort and pleasure to the entire cooking experience. Lots of pantry storage and pull out drawers for everyday use dishes would be an indispensable part of the kitchen cabinetry. For drawers, the use of full extension drawer slides indicates good quality drawers. This will allow easy access to those hard to reach objects and provides strong and sturdy support for fully loaded and heavy drawers. Consider also the countertop material. Countertop dictates much of the appearance and overall atmosphere of the entire kitchen especially if your kitchen design includes a large uninterrupted counter space. You can choose from a variety of materials like Laminate, Solid surface material sold under such names as Corian, Surrell, Gibraltar etc.., Ceramic tile, Granite and Marble, Stainless steel, Soapstone, Lavastone, Butcher\’s Block counters.
A seating area for those who are not actively participating in the cooking process but are there to accompany the cook for lively conversation is an added bonus to any kitchen design. If space is available, adding an island not only creates a good focal point but it also gives an added counter space, a good place for a quick meal or just a place where kids can hang out while mom prepares their favorite meal. The key to a successful kitchen design is the complete understanding of the true needs of the intended user. Once this is achieved, everything else in the design will just follow.
So, are you still fed up with looking at your old worn out kitchen? Then start planning for a renovation now.

Decorating an older home can be a real challenge. Most of us dont really want to live the way our ancestors did. The aim is to get the flavor of the era you wish to project without the discomfort and aggravation. Antique upholstery is not noted for its comfort. Antique beds tend to be too short for modern bodies and most of us prefer an inner spring or foam mattress to one stuffed with straw or horsehair. Although I have cooked on an iron wood stove and thoroughly enjoyed it in the depth of winter, there is nothing to recommend it in July. So where do you draw the line between authenticity and modern life?
Fortunately you can get modern upholstery, with modern foam, coil decks and cushions, in older styles and fabrics. Unless you are trying to get a museum room, it isnt necessary to copy the original styles exactly. Be careful of proportions, but any upholstery piece which is a classic style will blend with antiques, or reproductions. Fabric choices can give an antique look and are available in reproduced patterns made from modern, low maintenance fabrics. If you have antiques, avoid the need to put matched pairs of everything. Our ancestors loved that balanced look and many of us still find that a comfortable look to live with, but if only your upholstered pieces match, they will draw attention away from your show pieces.
The exception, as always, is in a formal room. If you are living in a home from the 1700\’s and want to get the flavor of the era, you will want more formalized seating patterns. However, the newer trend in historic houses is to have furniture from several eras from the original built date to represent. Our ancestors were thrifty. Furniture was hand produced and costly, so people didnt tend to pitch pieces which were out of style. It wasnt until mass produced, inexpensive furniture became widely available that people started dumping Grandmas pine table in the chicken house, or slapped a coat of green paint on the solid cherry drop leaf and put it on the front porch.
Generally, keep your upholstered pieces subdued but try for the correct style (or a modified version) of the window treatments and case pieces. Wing chairs have been popular for 300 years, but make sure yours are comfortable to sit on before you decide you have to have them. Our ancestors had much better posture and liked sitting very straight. Classic styles of modern furniture keep the lines of the old, but have a better slant to the backs. The real effect of the room can be created by how you decorate your walls, floors and windows, and by using accessories creatively.
Decorators are divided about such modern adjuncts as kitchen appliances, TVs and sound systems. My feeling is, good design blends with good design. Some of the newer appliances are beautifully designed and our ancestors would have made that stainless steel, side by side refrigerator with ice and water on the door, the showpiece of the house so I am not a big fan of attempting to hide large modern appliances behind wooden doors and cupboards. I do think they tend to look better in stainless or black but thats a personal opinion. The exception to the kitchen appliance rule is for houses built in the last century when kitchen appliances were becoming common. Reproductions are available in the styles of the 20\’s, 30\’s, 40\’s and 50\’s and can make a really clever kitchen which is fully functional.
My feeling about TVs and sound systems is similar. If you dont have a media room, there are hundreds of styles of armoires which will hide the TV and look like a piece of antique furniture. Choose carefully. They can be overwhelming. However, if you want the TV to sit out or hang on the wall, go for it. You can soften its stark modernity by the things you sit around it.
So when you decide to redecorate and give your home a more period feel, keep these things in mind.

\r Once you have done a little research into the look you are trying to create, adapt it to your own needs and decorate in the spirit of that era instead of trying to create a room which hasnt changed in 150 years.

Your bathroom is used every single day. Because of that it really should look as good as it possibly can. People, however, often neglect the bathroom because it\’s a functional room tucked away in the corner of most homes. Even your bathroom deserves to be decorated so why not spruce up your bathroom with some of these ideas?
Bathrooms use a lot of water so beach and ocean themes are often popular for these rooms. Beach themes can be a whole lot of fun. You could start by painting the room peach or bright blue and then add several sea shells or similar accessories. Any furniture in the bathroom should be wicker or whitewashed wooden pieces to add to the natural \”driftwood\” feeling. Any ocean theme will require the use of pale green or blue paint colors to properly convey the feeling of the sea. Again whitewashed or dark wood grained furnishings really complement this style of room.
If neither ocean nor beach themes feel right to you then you could consider a tropical decorating style for your bathroom. Tan and jungle green are great choices for this particular theme. A few touches of red can really add some spark to the room afterwards. Rattan furniture always looks great in tropical style bathrooms and a sisal rug is also the perfect replacement for the traditional bathroom rug.
What about an Italian style bathroom? This particular theme is rich and luxurious and perfect for bathrooms with a spa or soaking tub. Most Italian themes also use mosaics, which look great in any shower. If designing an Italian style bathroom then use gold, deep blue or red colors in your paint scheme for maximum effect.
Last but not least is the country decorating theme. This is a nice relaxed theme. Strong country colors are red, green, blue, yellow or tan. You can dress up your bathroom with French accessories or dress it down with some rustic elements. Pine furniture works best with this particular style.
Once you see the completed bathroom you won\’t believe it took you so long to decide to redecorate the room. After all, most people start their day in the bathroom, so why not start off right.

A spun glass figurine is a thing of beauty. Such an ornament is made from ornately designed crystal a fact that will tell you how exquisite figurines made from spun glass are without ever seeing them. You can get a spun glass figurine in just about any shape you can imagine ships, dolphins, angels, fairies, dragons and many more. Animal figurines made of glass are also very popular and for a collector there is no better gift than that of a spun glass figurine.
There is nothing as exquisite as a spun glass figurine in the shape of a sailing ship. This particular figurine stands 8 inches high and is over 9 inches wide. It makes the perfect centrepiece for a table or coffee table. Imagine how the light from a flickering fireplace will show off this figurine of spun glass to its greatest effect. When you are buying spun glass figurines, you can purchase those that are really tiny or larger models like the ship. The tiny figurines, such as glass animal figurines, look really elegant when you have them in a curio cabinet.
Children and adults alike adore glass animal figurines. If you wish you can add decorations to a spun glass figurine of an animal to give it the appearance of being in its natural habitat. However, most spun glass figurines are left alone allowing them to catch and reflect the light. Since these are delicate, they need to be kept away from places where they will be handled too much. This could lead to breakage. They also need to be dusted on a regular basis, which is why most collectors of spun glass ornaments and figurines like to have them in a display case of some kind.
Even though a spun glass figurine is mainly clear glass, you can get these figurines in colored glass as well. In a figurine of a hummingbird over flowers, having the flowers made of red or yellow really enhances the effect of the clear spun glass and shows it off beautifully. Such a figurine comes on a base of mirrored glass, which adds to the overall effect. You can also get glass animal figurines in various colors and when they are attached to green trees and plants, it makes them really exceptional pieces to add to your collection.
A spun glass figurine is not an expensive purchase. For less than $20, you can add a piece to your collection every now and then. If you do build up a collection of spun glass figurines over time, you should consider insuring it. When you add up the cost of replacing the spun glass and glass animal figurines, you will be surprised at the value you have amassed in your display. A spun glass figurine makes an exquisite gift and once people know you have a collection, they will not be at a loss as to what to give you.

If you are in the market for some new carpets you are probably already aware of how costly that can be. There are many ways you can get better pricing for your carpet such as buying remnants or flawed carpet. But why not save money and buy wholesale carpet? Yes even you as a consumer can buy wholesale carpet.
Many people hear the word wholesale and believe they must be a business, dealer, or high volume purchaser to get wholesale pricing. That\’s simply not true. There are various types of wholesale carpet plans around. You just need to find the one that works for your situation.
Carpet Wholesale Distributors have low overhead and great buying potential. You\’ll not find any store fronts here, just a basic large warehouse, lots of concrete, and lots of carpet. This type of carpet wholesaler is in business to supply carpet to carpet retailers. They may also deal with large corporate clients that buy large volumes of carpets. For instance developers of condos, home builders, or commercial office builders. There pricing is competitive and their goal is for there to be enough room for the retailer to add their mark up and still be competitive. They are quick to deliver their product.
Wholesale carpet retailers are open to the general public. Yes this means you! You can safe a substantial amount by buying your carpet from wholesale carpet retailers. Besides the savings there are other benefits like quick delivery and installation. You\’ll save both time and money.
There are a couple of reasons why these retailers can offer carpets at wholesale pricing while other retailers cannot. They have massive buying power so they order large volume and obtain the maximum discounts from the supplier.
You\’ll not find fancy show rooms, snazzy lighting, or any other cosmetic perks. What you\’ll find is a big concrete warehouse with rolls and rolls of carpet. This reduces their overhead dramatically
Most of these operations are looking to move volume at a reduced price so they are willing to work on a much smaller profit margin.
They purchase seconds and thirds meaning they have imperfections. These imperfections can be small or large. They might be a dye lot that was off, snags or runs, or a host of other items.
When buying from a wholesale carpet retailer you\’ll want to find out the answers to these questions.
Make sure you understand the warranty and whether any warranty claims will be dealt with at the wholesaler level or whether you\’ll need to deal with the manufacturer of the carpet.
You\’ll also want to know if the carpet you are buying are seconds, Normally too small to notice but you\’ll need to make sure. The last thing you need is a nice long line of missed looping that runs right through the center of the carpet. Just be sure to have a really good look if you are buying seconds. You\’ll also want to find out if the manufacturers warranty is still valid.
Remember if a deal sounds to good to be true, 99.9% of the time it is. So if the price is just to good find out what\’s wrong with the product before you jump the gun and spend your money on an unsatisfactory product.
Make sure you get your pricing with underlay and installation. No sense in getting cheap carpet if they soak it to you on the underlay or install. So be sure to get a full package price.
Buying wholesale carpet can save you a ton of money. So if you don\’t care if there\’s a fancy show room, and you don\’t need someone to hold your hand while you pick out your carpet, and you just care about basic service this is a doable option. So remember save money and buy wholesale carpet! Think of all the money you\’ll have left for other home decor projects.

Everyone loves a big kitchen. Theres lots of room for more than one cook, and enough space for informal dining. However, a large kitchen can sometimes feel cold and uninviting. By following certain guidelines, you can have a warm and cozy kitchen no matter the size.
First, consider the scale of your furniture when decorating a large kitchen. Youll want a substantial table with comfortable seating rather than a small caf table. The kitchen is also a great place to show off your collectibles. Add a bakers rack, wine rack, lighted glass hutch or other storage/display pieces. Obviously, youll want some sort of shelving or cabinet space for your cookbooks, pottery, display dishes, or even for collections that have nothing to do with kitchens and cooking.
Next, see if the kitchen can accommodate an island either a small portable butcher block work station or a fixed island with workspace, an extra sink, and bar stool seating that makes it a great place for a quick breakfast or after school snack.
Most important, good lighting is vital in the kitchen, especially for preparing and cooking food. If you have a large kitchen, buy large lighting fixtures and add plenty of recessed lighting, including lighting under the cabinets.
Make the kitchen inviting to the eye by adding potted plants (silk or real) and/or decorative pieces, such as urns, wall hangings, and some architectural pieces to match your dcor. Also think about turning one wall into a gallery for the kids photos and crayoned art work.
Some kitchens have a fireplace, making the room instantly warm and friendly. Even without one, you can turn that large kitchen into a homey, welcoming space.

Most decorators traditionally recommend a minimalist dcor \r for many spaces, particularly small spaces such as apartments and guest \r houses. Unfortunately, many people\r believe that this means that the walls should be kept completely bare for a \r minimalist dcor to work. Aren\’t pictures too flashy for a minimalist \r dcor?
Art\r Prints: Perfect Complement to a Minimalist Decor
In a word: no, pictures are not too flashy to use with a \r minimalist dcor. In a few more words: art prints\r are not too flashy for a minimalist dcor, as long as you select your prints\r carefully. In fact, in rooms with minimalist decor, art\r prints\r add character and highlight the fact that the decor really is minimalist and not \r just neglected.
The trick with choosing art\r prints\r carefully is just to pick one print, or pick a few prints\r on a highly related subject or in a similar style, preferably all by the same \r artist. In a room with minimalist dcor, the prints\r will easily get more attention than anything else in the room, so you want to be \r careful that the prints\r do not conflict with each other. An obvious example: if you really like \r Monet\’s paintings of water\r lilies, you could get several prints\r each of a different Monet \r painting of water\r lilies.
There is a special concern if your dcor is not just \r minimalist but strikingly modernist (for instance, lots of simple furniture with \r clear angles or curves rather than carved woodwork). In a room with a \r particularly modernist dcor, prints\r that are from an earlier era might seem out of place. Go with prints \r that were created more or less in the era in which your furniture was designed, \r or in which your furniture\’s design was most popular.
Obviously, there is a lot of room for personal judgment as to \r what goes with what, since modernist anything always was designed not to look as \r though it belonged to a particular period of time. It can be even more \r confusing if your modernist-looking furniture was really just designed to look \r spare in a general way rather than to hark to a particular school of \r design. In those cases, just try to go for something that looks like it \r matches, sticking to prints\r of artworks that are modern but that are not immediately recognizable as \r belonging to a specific decade.
If your furniture leans toward the 1950s and 60s style of \r modernism (the kind of playful curves that would be at home in a room with a \r sunburst clock on the wall), try prints\r of the work of a period artist such as Jackson Pollack. If your dcor\’s \r modernism leans toward the seventies or eighties (e.g., glass-topped coffee \r tables and very spare design, you might be better off with Jasper Johns than \r Jackson Pollack.
Choosing Art\r Prints\r for Rooms with Multiple Colors
subdued. Just look at the vibrant paintings of modern
artist Mondrian, such as \”Broadway Boogie Woogie\”, composed entirely of
interlocking rectangles, square, triangles, and circles. If you\’d like
to keep your dcor simple even with a striking color scheme, art
prints
can actually help. Here\’s why:

make sure the walls provide visual interest, too, so the eye is not pulled
relentlessly downward toward the furniture or rugs. Of course, you have
to be careful not to give people
a headache. As a rule of thumb, the more riotous the play of
colors on the ground, the more orderly the play of colors on the walls should
be. If the vibrant colors of your furnishings tend to swirl together,
lend the room calm with artwork
that takes those colors and presents them in neat lines and blocks.
dcor is a well-rhymed composition, not just a loud burst of color.
Visitors to your pad who see a blue couch, red end tables, and yellow lamps
might well wonder what you were thinking–until they see a print of \”Broadway
Boogie Woogie,\” or other artwork
that shows how these disparate colors really do belong
together.
of a room with a minimalist interior design, and there is beauty in the art
that takes the same simple approach. If you keep that fact in mind when
choosing artwork for your minimalist room, you can make sure your dcor is
more than minimally beautiful.

The furniture in a person\’s home says a lot about personal style and taste. In effect, most of us spend endless hours searching for the perfect piece of furniture before we actually make a purchase. With the availability of furniture from so many different time periods and schools of design, the choice can sometimes be daunting.
Furniture can reflect many personality characteristics, from fun and flirty to classy and sophisticated to modern and edgy. How do you choose the right piece?
Showrooms generally sort furniture by room, and within these rooms the pieces are further distinguished by style. If you are looking for a Chippendale sofa, for example, you will certainly find it with living room furniture, but it probably won\’t be placed next to the black suede chaise. Sometimes it can take a lot of patience to browse through furniture showrooms. Because your furniture will brand you, though, it will be worth your while to take your time and wait until you find what\’s right for you.
There has a been a trend recently toward studio furniture. This furniture is built in a studio environment, not by a large factory manufacturer, and therefore tends to be more unique. Studio furniture makers view themselves as artists or craftsmen. Many learn their craft not through apprenticeship but through university-level design and art courses. Of course, original style often equals higher prices. Just as we pay more for designer clothing, we pay more for carefully crafted furniture. Studio furniture tends to be more contemporary but may be influenced by more traditional furniture styles.
Many buyers are drawn to antiques. Antique furniture often creates a regal air in a home. If combined creatively with more modern pieces, antiques can add flavor to even a contemporary styled room. Mixing and matching different styles of furniture is quite fashionable these days, if done correctly.
Regardless of style, it is imperative that the furniture you choose is solidly built. Spending a little more may be worth your while if the furniture is made with better materials, as it will prove more durable in the long run. There is always room for practicality in a furniture purchase.

Properly storing wine keeps flavor and lets wine age so that you can taste its evolving, complex flavor. Buying a wine rack, however, can be pricey, especially for someone who is more interested in developing a robust wine collection, not decorating.
Before you begin construction, plan where you will put the wine rack. Storing the wine in the right environment is crucial to its flavor. Always store wine in a cool, dark, and slightly humid area. Never store wine in the sun or in the heat. It will cook the wine and ruin its flavor. Keep the temperature between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Store the wine on its side so it keeps the cork moist.
Wine rack kits let you grow your wine collection piece by piece. Wall-mounted wine racks let you store nine to 36 bottles on one shelf. Wall-mounted metal wine racks make it easy to see the label of each bottle. Expect to pay between $50 and $100 for each shelf. Dont be afraid to ask the retailer for a discount if you buy many shelves at once. You can also buy matching wine islands so that you can store wine and have a tabletop in your wine cellar. Look online for the best selection.
Build your own wine rack for the lowest cost. Free plans are on the Internet, and youll probably need at least a table saw or jigsaw, a sander, and drill press. For simple projects, you can expect to pay less than $10 for equipment.
Probably the cheapest, but most effective wine rack you can build uses brick and wood planks. Stack the bricks for height, and use wooden planks with smaller wooden dividers for an easy-to-make wine rack.

Wood bar stools are one of the most popular types of stools on the furniture market. Youll find them all over the place in peoples homes, businesses, restaurants, inside and outside. The versatility and flexibility of these great home furnishings is simply unmatched. Lets look at why this is.
The nice thing about wood bar stools is their strength and durability. They are considered the most versatile of all the different types of bar stools. Since metal stools have a hard time fitting into most decors other that really modern wood will be your best bet. The nice thing is that they are simple to change should your dcor change. Since most of us like to change our minds, you cant always count on your current color and dcor themes to be the same. So the smart thing to do is buy good solid furniture that will last longer than you current moods.
Wooden bar stools will always fit in around your house no matter what changes take place. A simple padded cushion added to the seats can make a world of difference. Maybe even an update of upholstery from your current ones is all that you need. Wood can also be painted or re-stained to help change their look and feel. Youd be surprised how much a fresh coat of paint can do for you. Its very easy to give your wood bar stools a makeover!
Since wood is a natural product there happens to be a number of different species available that can be suitable for furniture. These include cherry, maple, oak, bamboo, mahogany, teak etc. You do need to use some sort of harder wood or the products wont last.
In the traditional styles the deeper and darker wooden stools work really well. Their rich feel with their detailed backs and leg designs add to the comfortable settings of a traditional home. These great stools along with some sort of a seat pad in a dark fabric can really add some punch to any room.
If youre looking for more of a modern wood look youll find many to choose from. Theyll be very clean in terms of their lines and shape. The simple looks fit in nicely with big open and bright rooms. They work well with bright bold colors, even blacks or whites. Almost all of these styles will have a hard seat, as most padded cushions dont blend well with the clean simpler feel.
The country look of wood bar stools brings an entirely different feel. A lot of these are painted or stained with a two-toned look. What that means is the stools have two different colors on them. Usually theyre a dark and a light contrast. These offer a soft warm feeling that invites you to sit in them. You can use hard or padded seats depending on how country youre trying to go. They work great in any country home.
Weve found that wood bar stools are the best way to go when youre looking for good quality comfortable seating that will stand up to the test of time. Increase the lifespan of your bar stools by choosing wood. Youll be happy you did.
